An Imaginary Person

Once upon a time, there was a man called Bob. He was a Christian man. Bob really liked to watch the movie “SpongeBob Square pants” every Saturday. Especially when it was Easter. Sometimes when Bob was bored he learned to speak other languages like Spanish. He became really good after a while. When Bob had a presentation at school the other day, he talked about World War 2.

He thought that the history was very interesting. Last summer when Bob was in London, he was on a bus tour and he visited some places like Buckingham Palace. He thought about Queen Elisabeth II and her special yellow dress she has. Bob also heard about the Conservatives and the Democrats, but he did not find that very interesting.

A passage to India

Viewpoints
1.        Look up the words “Rural” and “Urban” in a dictionary and find out what they mean.
Rural: living in the country.
Urban: living in a city.

2.      What are the difference between rural and urban areas in Norway? In India?
The majority of the population lives in/around the major cities in Norway, in urban areas. However, Norway has a small population (under 5million) so even the "major" cities are small on a global level.
Nearly 70% of India’s population lives in rural areas where, for the first time since independence, the overall growth rate of population has sharply declined, according to the latest Census.

3.      “If everyone in the world consumed as much as people in industrialized countries do, we would need eight (!) planets as big as the earth to meet their demands” Comment on this statement.
We produce a lot of things these days and throw away a really big amount of food and garbage. If the whole world did this, it would be too much garbage to deal with.

4.      Some people in Europe and America have changed their way of life to “simple living” in eco-villages or small farms in rural areas. The basic idea is to go back to nature, produce your own food, share and live in closely-knit communities. Can you think of reasons why people choose this way of life?

I think they choose it because they for example do not like the pollution and damage the factories creates.

The only way?

Some people will say that, “Modern digital technology is a blessing and the only way forward”. But is this true? Is modern digital technology the only way forward? In this article we will look closer into what modern technology means to us and what the consequences of it is or will be.

Firstly, the technology can be very helpful and it can be used as a tool. If you are going to take the bus for example, you can check on the internet the times it drives by your nearest bus stop. Or if you’re going to make dinner, you can search for different recipes. That is much easier than checking it in a book. When you have to buy a new phone, there is probably thousands of websites where you can see recommendations about the product.

Secondly, the technology is the future. In the past hundred years, the technology has come so far and can be used to so much things. Like the cars for example, the development has been amazing. From the old cars that did not have much equipment to the cars they produce today with all the new technology. Think about how the cars will look in another hundred years.

However, there are not just good things about the modern technology. While some people use the technology as a helpful tool, some others just sit home and play videogames all day. This can lead to lots of problems. Like getting addicted. Many peoples who has been sitting home and played games, got addicted. Some peoples even stopped going out and became unsocial. Not to mention all the health problems that have showed up. Many people are getting something called “tablet neck” because of hours spent using their phones or tablets/iPad’s.

So maybe the modern technology is the only way forward, but like almost everything else, it comes with and without benefits. Therefore, we have to be careful and use the technology wisely. Because the development will probably keep going on.

Events in American History

1. Do you think the colonies had good reason to declare Independence? Why?
2. Should one country be able to colonize another? When should a colony be granted Independence?
3. The Bill of Rights guarantees Americans "the right to bear arms". Many Americans still feel this is important for personal safety and in case they need to revolt  against their own government, They argue that the Minutemen and the local militias only won the fight for Independence beacause they had firearms.
What do you think?
Should everyone have the right to bear arms? All kinds of arms?
4. If you were to present your nation's history in the same way as above, which events would you choose? Why?
- List the events and write a couple of sentences about them.

1. Yes, I think they had good reasons to declare independence because they should not have to pay taxes for King George III because the war had been expensive for him.

2. One country should not be able to colonize another if the country is doing fine. If a country are falling apart they maybe need that another country comes in to take control to help them.

3. I think that many Americans feel that they need to protect their selves, their families and loved ones by having a gun because of the school shootings and other episodes where innocents has been killed for no reasons by peoples with guns. I can understand that. In America crimes and shootings happens more often than here in Norway or here in Scandinavia. If you envision the amount of people who are like mental ill and kills someone here you can imagine how many more there are in America. Not everyone should have the rights to bear arms, but I think it is impossible to keep the guns away from the people who should not be able to bear them.
